Second Trimester Ultrasound
Assessing Fetal Anatomy and Excluding Major Malformations
The second trimester ultrasound, commonly referred to as the morphological ultrasound, is one of the most important examinations during pregnancy. It is performed between the 19th and 22nd weeks of gestation and primarily aims to thoroughly assess the anatomy of the fetus to exclude congenital malformations. During this ultrasound, the doctor carefully examines all the organs and systems of the baby, including the brain, heart, kidneys, spine, and limbs.
The morphological ultrasound allows for the precise identification of any fetal anomalies, such as neural tube defects (like spina bifida), heart malformations, renal abnormalities, or issues with the skeletal system. Although many of these problems are rare, the morphological ultrasound enables early diagnosis and, in some cases, allows for planning intrauterine or post-natal surgical interventions to correct the anomalies.
During the ultrasound, the doctor also measures the fetal head circumference, abdominal circumference, and femur length to ensure that growth is within normal ranges. This examination also provides parents with an opportunity to see their baby in detail, strengthening their bond with the unborn child.
