Fetal Growth Ultrasound

Fetal Growth Ultrasound

Fetal growth ultrasound is an examination performed during the third trimester of pregnancy to monitor the baby’s growth and ensure that it is developing adequately. It is particularly useful in pregnancies where there are concerns about fetal growth, such as in cases of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), or when the mother has conditions like gestational diabetes that can affect fetal growth.

During this examination, the doctor measures parameters such as the fetal head circumference, abdominal circumference, and femur length. These measurements are compared to standard growth curves to verify that the baby is growing properly. In addition to the measurements, the ultrasound allows for the evaluation of the amount of amniotic fluid, an important indicator of fetal well-being.

If the ultrasound detects below-normal fetal growth, further tests may be requested to investigate the causes and monitor the baby more closely. In some cases, the pregnancy may require an early induction of labor to avoid major complications. Conversely, if the fetus is larger than expected (fetal macrosomia), the doctor may plan specific interventions during delivery to prevent difficulties.
