Pre-Morphological Ultrasound

Pre-Morphological Ultrasound

The pre-morphological ultrasound is a scan performed between the 16th and 18th weeks of pregnancy. Its primary purpose is to assess the early development of the fetus by checking the growth of organs and body structures at this still early stage. While a complete morphological ultrasound is conducted later in the second trimester, the pre-morphological ultrasound already provides important information about the baby’s health and can detect any major malformations or abnormalities.

During this ultrasound, the doctor carefully examines the spine, heart, skull, limbs, and internal organs of the fetus. Although some structures may not yet be fully developed, the pre-morphological ultrasound allows for the detection of severe anomalies that could require further investigations or timely medical interventions. For instance, neural tube defects or congenital heart anomalies can be identified at this stage.

For couples who want detailed monitoring of fetal health, the pre-morphological ultrasound offers additional reassurance, allowing for early intervention if necessary. Moreover, in some cases, it can help parents prepare psychologically and plan for any potential therapeutic pathways.
