Maternal-Fetal Flowmetry: A Vital Ultrasound Examination
Maternal-fetal flowmetry is an advanced ultrasound examination that assesses blood flow between the mother and fetus via the umbilical cord and placenta. This test is particularly beneficial for monitoring fetal health in high-risk pregnancies where there are concerns about growth issues, maternal hypertension, preeclampsia, or placental abnormalities. It is conducted using Doppler ultrasound, which employs sound waves to measure the speed and direction of blood flow.
Flowmetry helps ensure that the fetus receives an adequate supply of oxygen and nutrients through the placenta. If any abnormalities in blood flow are detected, the physician may suspect the presence of intrauterine growth restriction.
